Rawhide-NYC and LEATHERFirst-NYC Are pleased to announce the judges for the 2011 Mr. Rawhide-NYC Competition. We are honored to have them involved in this event. Stay tuned for additions, and updates.

The Judges for the Mr. Rawhide-NYC 2011 Competition are as follows:

1. DARRELL. B. PERRY, Judge Emeritus

Darrell B. Perry (Darrellblackandblue) has been active in the New York Leather scene since 1990. He has been a member of GMSMA and has been co-founder or founding member of some of the New York area's most influential leatherclubs including Brothers In Leather and Masters & slaves Together, NY. He was a Secretary for the NY Panthers Leatherclub. He was an on-air host of WBAI-NY's OutFM and was a co-president of the station's Local Area Board. He has served as an editor on the magazine Black Leather in Color and worked in various capacities for New York's all-club charity, Leather Pride Night. Darrell also produces a leather-themed play-party called Darrell’s Dungeon; a daytime sex party called Hot Lunch, NY and is building a network of interconnected web-based businesses to serve the leather and gay communities at DarrellsDungeon.com.

2. STEVE RANGER

Steve Ranger, President of the Centaur Motorcycle Club, chair of the Mid-Atlantic Leather contest for the past 5 years, Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather 2005 and Mr. Double L 2004, has been involved in the leather community for 19 years. He usually can be found as a patron, volunteer, den daddy or judge at leather community events. A firm believer that we must speak together to be heard, Steve is a member of these organizations which advocate for the leather and broader GLBT community: the Leather Archives & Museum, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and the Human Rights Campaign. Steve's community involvement extends beyond leather and politics. He actively supports the efforts of the Whitman-Walker Clinic, the Atlantic States Gay Rodeo Association, the Sussex County (Delaware) HIV/AIDS Wellness Clinic, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society, and the outreach program of the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington DC. He enjoys scuba diving (he is a Dive Master and Master Diver), working out, the beach, camping, hiking, whitewater rafting, and traveling. Steve and his husband, Dan Patton, have made a home in DC's Capitol Hill neighborhood for 18 years.

3. DOC. HOSKINS JR.

“Doc” Hoskins Jr. is the Leatherman of Color for 2007, a Founder of ONYX New York , a board member of Folsom Street East and a member of NY’s Leather Pride Night. He has and continues to participate in a multitude of fund raising events for the LGBT community at large, C.L.A.W. Cleveland Leather Awareness Weekend and wherever his volunteer services can be most useful around the country. He is the Producer of the Leatherman of Color contest and a recipient of the Mufasa Lion’s award, one of the highest awards that can be given to an ONYX member for outstanding achievement for exemplifying the epitome of a man of color in the ONYX ranks.

He is also a Master’s Division boxer, trainer, poet, computer technician by trade and a self published author of THE PUGILIST: Erotic Boxing Adventures. He is currently working on his next three novels simultaneously and is a spokes model for Rubio Leather in New York .

5. JOE ZASO, Celebrity Guest Judge!

Joe Zaso has been producing and acting in horror films to the point where he has been crowned "Horror Himbo," "Scream King," and "Gore Male." He has acted in the States and in Europe in such movies as "BARRICADE," "BEAST," "BRAINCELL," "DARKNESS SURROUNDS ROBERTA," "DEMONIUM," "NIKOS THE IMPALER," and "5 DEAD ON THE CRIMSON CANVAS." He has acted on episodes of "ALL MY CHILDREN" and has appeared as The New Jersey Devil in promos for the famed New Jersey hockey team. He has also done print work for Legal Seafood. He is also known for his modeling work. On February 1, Lions Gate released on DVD "VIRUS X" starring Joe along with the legendary Sybil Danning. Joe is also in preproduction to star in the upcoming "AMONGST THE LIVING"

6. ERIC PRIDE

Sir Eric Pride heads, together with his wife Lady Christie, a structured lifestyle household in New York. The primary focus of the household is on integrating healthy power-exchange dynamics into daily life and to provide guidance, training, and support for its individuals. He enjoys consensual S&M, blogs on different aspects of the lifestyle, and gives presentations on structured living and S&M.

Sir Eric is a founding member and an instructor at the Master/slave Development Center, an educational group for Masters and slaves.

He is the founder of NYC Kinky Living (NYCKL) and the producer of the workshop series “Creating and Living Positive BDSM Lifestyle Relationships.”

Reflections on The First- From The Producer

It is now a week since the weekend of the First Ever Mr. Rawhide-NYC Competition took place in New York City, and now, that the dust has settled, it is with fond memories that I write this.

When I first began to formulate the contest itself, I wanted, most definitely, to be true to both Rawhide, my favorite Leather bar, Anywhere, (The first one I actually ever entered), as well as enhance and bring something new to the New York City Leather scene. Sounds simple enough, no? Not quite, but the result was something I am very proud of. This was the first time that anything on the scale of the contest was ever attempted or completed at Rawhide, and I realized that I was bringing in a breed and look to the bar that has been away from the bar in force for too long. I also realize that many of the bar patrons had no idea what was coming to them. Several thought that the simple funny on-stage question served double duty as the interviews themselves.

The Four Contestants were and are all amazing individuals, representing a great cross-section of the Leather Community. The each have an enormous heart, and were put through the ringer by our judging panel. (The interviews themselves held Sat am and into the early afternoon were crazy, I know, having been in them myself several times as both a judge and contestant.) I can not say anything negative about any of the contestants. Ryan, Colin, Jason and Paul are each awesome men, and did an amazing job!

For the judging panel of the event, I wanted a cross-section of the NYC Leather Community as well. Along the theme of "going back to basics" I chose carefully, individuals who I felt had an impact on the City's Leather History. Hence the inclusion of MAsT NY Coordinator and Iron Guard (The Longest Running Leather Patch Club) President Master Tip, Former President of the now defunct GMSMA Grant Anderson, Panthers founder Head Judge Darrell Perry, and The LeatherMan Inc's own Cirr Tone. For the remaining judges I went to last years Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather Kip Hollar, whom I know would be a tough sell for the contestants and keep them on their toes, Morgaine, representing the female Leather Community, and to add a kick and flair I wanted a porn star, whom I found in Mike Dreyden. All of these judges come from different perspectives and are on their own journies, but all had one thing in mind: To pick the First ever Mr. Rawhide-NYC. In fact two of the judges, Grant and Darrell, are in face regulars at the bar itself, and it was great to have them included. For the rest of the staff I wrangled Spanky and Damian, from NJ to serve as TallyMasters, Fenix to be the Judgesboy (and he ROcked), and Hilary, who is the ultimate Den Daddy. Spinning tunes was NYC famed DJ Baker.

Of course, an event like this, in a bar like Rawhide, needs its ringmaster, and who better in NYC than Will Clark himself? It was a no brainer.

As is always the case, especially when you do a first time event, sometimes Shite happens, and you just have to deal with it, the best that you can. On Saturday, the heavens opened and the monsoonal winds and rain pelted 8th Avenue. It didn't look good. But what can you do? You just move on. While setting up the staging area and the bar the event had its first Streaker Stripper Dancer lol (How I wish there was a picture, and no, it wasn't pretty lol) but we moved on. The Sound system's speakers began failing and the Singer, unhappy with the sound equipment, opted to not sing. Sad, but we move on, and it was awesome that Chicago GoGo Star Ray Daniels was there to step right on in. I have always said that Rawhide would be great with Hairy Strippers and Dancers, and Ray Daniels proved me Right! Again, we just moved on right ahead.

The crowd that came to the event was nothing short of exhilerating. Titleholders from The Eagle and even THE LURE were on hand, along with NJ Titleholders, and LeatherMen from the Eastern Coast. It was such an amazing thing to experience, and I was honored that they all came and had a fun time.

Of course, I need to mention the bar itself, and the workers there. One of the most amazing aspect of Rawhide is that, yes, it's a very intimidating looking place. The One Way Windows, the layers of Leather that must be passed through to enter the bar itself, the lighting, are all typical Leather, but what sets, in my opinion, the bar itself from other Leather bars, are the people behind the bar itself. For those who dare enter Rawhide (often times in spite of rumblings from the Chelsea gays and other Leather folk themselves, the people who are behind the bar go out of their way to make you feel at home. I was so delighted that Mike, Cliff, and Helen were behind the bar. They were simply awesome. Anytime you hear Mike's laugh, or see Cliff smile, or Helen grin, you can't help but feel uplifted, and the three of them went out of their way to make sure that ALL felt welcome. And it showed!!!

Now, onto the sponsors. It was an honor to have The LeatherMan, Inc. create such a classic design for the sash and patch. They are a work of Art. Steel Gym, with their amazing donation of a year membership (over $1000), was nothing less than spectacular. The Black Party, Nasty Pig,Darrell's Dungeon, The NY Bondage Club, Rainbows and Triangles, MyLady's Toys, each of these sponsors must be thanked over and over again for their generous contribution to our little event, and I hope that they will be involved in the years to come, as already, things are underway for next year's contest.

As for the near future of the bar itself, many exciting things are happening SOON! There is going to be a New Web Blog for the bar itself, right here on Blogger, as well as a Facebook Page. Tuesday Nights will be Harness Night, with Drink Specials to those who don their Harnesses (with Cliff Behind the bar), Rawhide will hopefully be making their first appearance in the Annual Pride Parade in June, and Coming in MAY, the first of the new monthly Leather/Fetish Parties (name still being settled upon) will kick off the new era of the bar itself.

I will be working with Jay, the amazing owner, closely on all of these events and activities. I will also be working closely with our first Titleholder, Ryan, to make sure he has a successful year as the first Mr. Rawhide NYC.

Going Raw! Back to Basics: Contest Format

The format of the Mr. Rawhide NYC Leather Contest is going back to the basics, when contests were held as promotions for a bar or an establishment, or, in the case of Drummer magazine, publication sales. The titleholder will focus his title year on not only the promotion and representation of the bar itself, but on the local gay NYC Leather community via volunteer work, fundraising and education endeavors. It is not until the following year, 2011, that the titleholder will be moving on, if he so wishes, to an International Contest (I.e. IML or ABW). The Mr. Rawhide NYC title contest is not in competition with the other already established contests in the area. The contest format, in and of itself, is being kept simple, with the Meet and Greet/Bar wear portion of the contest on Friday, followed by the Interview, Physique, Formal Leather and Speech categories on Saturday.

The following is a preliminary schedule for the Mr. Rawhide 2010 competition.

Friday Night (March 12th)

9:00pm-1:00am Meet and Greet/Contestant Number Drawing.

Contest contestants, staff and judges will be at Rawhide, mingling with the normal Friday night clientele. During this time the contestants will be judged by the judges on their social interaction, as well as their bar wear clothing. Following the regularly scheduled strippers (Approx. 12:30am) the contestants and staff will be announced, as well as the contestant number drawing for the following days contest.

Saturday Day (March 13th)

11:30am-3:00pm Contestant Interviews.

The closed interviews will take place at The LGBT Center, in a room/location TBA.

5:00pm-7:30pm- Mr. Rawhide 2010 Contest.

During this time will be the official contest. The contest will be kept simple, and consist of the following judged categories:

1. Introduction.

During this category the contestants will be introduced according to their assigned number and deliver a brief introduction to the audience.

2. Jock Strap/Physique.

During this category the contestants will enter in their jock straps (adhering to local NYC laws)and show off their goods as the Emcee will read from their bios.

3. Formal Leather/Speech

During this category the contestants will enter in their formal leather attire, and deliver a two minute maximum speech as to why they want to be the first Mr. Rawhide Leather, as well as what they intend to accomplish with the title itself.

The contest will conclude with the announcement of the raffle winners and the selection of the first Mr. Rawhide.

Immediately following the contest will be the victory party, which will take place at Rawhide.

i am the proud alpha boy of CirrTone and have been with Him for the past two years. i’m a proud Venezuelan by birth and have now lived in NYC for 9 years. i’m slowly spreading my wings and forging friendships within the leather community.

So far, i’ve modeled Exit-7-Gear and been a part of GMSMA’s 2009 Fashion Show. i have also worked for the Leatherman at MAL and Folsom East.

History of the Leather Contest, and where Mr. Rawhide NYC fits in!

Going back to what many deem "The Golden Age of Leather", the 1970's, there was a little bar in Chicago called The Gold Coast, which opened up in the late 1950's. This establishement, like many of it's kind in the 1970's began to hold a contest. The purpose of the contest? To help bring customers and money into the bar itself. To pick a representative of the community for the bar itself. Over the years, the contest has evolved with the times to include community service and charity. The representatives? Leathermen, and shortly following, Leatherwomen. In fact, the Gold Coast Contest, in 1979, became too large for the bar itself, and expanded, and has kept expanding to what is known today as IML.

Here on the East Coast, in NYC, we are revving up the leather engines for the first Mr. Rawhide Competition. What exactly does this mean? What are we looking for? What will the titleholder become after he has won his title? That's what this blog is here to address.

With the Mr. Rawhide Competition we are going back to basics. We're getting raw, so to speak. First and foremost, the contest is being designed to find a representative for the bar, and to brign in potential new clientele. The titleholder will act as a representative for the bar throughout the city at other leather, gay and fetish functions and events. Working with the bar and LEATHERfirst-NYC, the titleholder will have the opportunity to participate in 2 charity events, and also the prospect of a recurring theme party at the bar itself! For the winner's title year, he will focus his time and energy on the local level, establishing himself within NYC's community, as well as other surrounding communities. It is then, in 2011, that the contestant will be moving on to IML.

Why the year wait?

Conestants at the International Level spend months and months preparing for the contest. With the Mr. Rawhide contest happening in March, only two months before IML, there is frankly not enough time to prepare a contestant for that level. Also, and almost more importantly, it is important for the local NYC community, and the bar itself, that its representative stick around, so to speak. Also, for the contestant, he will have a full year and then some of preparing to compete at the international level, and will have established a strong support group throughout the city he represents.

In staying true to the basics, the contest will be kept simple. A Meet and Greet/Bar Wear portion on Friday evening, followed by the main event on Saturday, which features interview, speech, physicque and formal wear portions of the contest.

The contest is designed to be fun, exciting, and perhaps a little sleazy!!! A good time is guaranteed to be had by all!

Besides the title itself, the winner will receive an amazing prize package which, within the following month or so, will be revealed here!

WILL CLARK has been entertaining for the past 15 years, first as an actor in XXX films (1995 – 1999, 2003) and stripper at clubs around the country (1996 – 2005, 2007) and then later as a writer of online and print columns (since 1998) and as an MC for hundreds of porn, leather and fundraising events (since 1997).

As a producer, Will created the Bad Boys Pool Party (LA 1998 – 2002, Palm Springs 2001 – 2005) and the Bad Boys on the Hudson event aboard the Sea Tea (New York 2004 – present). As an MC, Will has headlined “Cocktails with the Stars” at Micky’s in West Hollywood (1999 – 2002) and created “Porn Idol” (OW, Stonewall, XL 2004 – 2006) and, since 2005, produces and hosts “Porno Bingo” at Pieces which reached it’s 100k fundraising goal in November 2009. He also has MCed the Mr. and Ms. NJ Leather contest in Asbury Park since 2006.

Will is honored to be hosting the Mr. Rawhide 2010 contest and will look forward to getting his nipples played with by all the contestants (and as many of the judges who are into it ).

1. Special Guest Judge Mike Dreyden!

2. Morgaine, Ms. NJ Leather 2010 (msnjleather2010.blogspot.com)

BIO. After 14 months of an unfulfilled marrage, Morgaine realized that she liked pussy. And liked to beat it. So began her journey into the world of Leather and BDSM. After 8 years of staying on the sidelines, honing her skills, and learning about history and the community, Morgaine, with the love of her life of 2.5 years, her girl, entered the public sphere. She is proud to serve as Ms. NJ Leather 2010. She is involved with various community organizations including TRIBE New Jersey. She has spoken on BDSM at local Universities, and is on the Board of Directors for Philadelphia Leather Pride Night. Living near Seaside Heights with her girl and their kids "4 cats, 2 dogs", she always offers a helping hand towards others to help them find the wonder and family that is Leather.

3. Darrell B. Perry (www.darrellsdungeon.com)

Darrell B. Perry (Darrellblackandblue) has been active in the New York Leather scene since 1990. He has been a member of GMSMA and has been co-founder or founding member of some of the New York area's most influential leatherclubs including Brothers In Leather and Masters & slaves Together, NY. He was a Secretary for the NY Panthers Leatherclub. He was an on-air host of WBAI-NY's OutFM and was a co-president of the station's Local Area Board. He has served as an editor on the magazine Black Leather in Color and worked in various capacities for New York's all-club charity, Leather Pride Night. Darrell also produces a leather-themed play-party called Darrell’s Dungeon; a daytime sex party called Hot Lunch, NY and is building a network of interconnected web-based businesses to serve the leather and gay communities at DarrellsDungeon.com.

4. J. Grant Anderson
Past President, GMSMA

A Long Island native now living in New York City.

Grant was a member of Gay Male S/M Activists from 2000 until it’s recent dissolution in June of 2009. Grant served on the Board of Directors of GMSMA for four years and as President for two years.

He has served on the Folsom Street East committee for two years, the local planning committee for the Tenth Annual Leather Leadership Conference held in New York in April 2006. He also serves as location manager for the New York City Leather Pride Night committee, being held this year June 19, 2010, at M2 Ultralounge on West 28th Street. Grant is also a member of Delta Brotherhood International – a non-profit fraternal S&M organization. Grant’s interest include leather, rubber, ropes & bondage, flogging, hot wax, general S&M, cigars. Grant practices safe, sane and consensual sex and play scenes. Grant believes one should never miss out on an opportunity, intimate contact is always negotiable.

5. Kip Hollar
Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather 2009

Ushering in the new generation of Leatherfolk, Kip is a resident of Baltimore, MD, but spends most of his time in Washington, DC. It was only a little over a year ago that he was introduced to the leather community at Baltimore Pride 2008. Since then, he has gone on to compete in Mr. Maryland Leather 2009, placing first runner-up, Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather 2009, winning the coveted title, and most recently International Mr. Leather 2009, placing 10th among the Top 20 Finalists of 54 dynamic contestants.

Kip has had the honor and privilege of being asked to serve as judge for several contests, including American Brotherhood Weekend’s 2009 American Leatherman, Leatherwoman, and Leatherboy; Mr. Connecticut Leather 2010; Mr. Old Dominion Leather 2010; Mr. Pittsburgh Eagle 2010; and most recently Mr. Rawhide NYC Leather 2010.
Kip is an operations manager for UPS – "What can Big Brown do for you?"

Additionally, he owns an event marketing, promotional modeling, and talent management company – Blue Crab Productions. Kip’s education and background includes business administration and hotel/restaurant management, focusing on banquets, catering, and event planning. He also served 16 months contracted to the Department of Defense with the United States Air Force Air Mobility Command conducting special airlift missions and troop movement, which afforded him the opportunity to travel the world, visiting 15 foreign countries and nearly every State in the Union. Most of that time was spent in Germany and Kuwait, where he was often mistaken as a local citizen. Kip aspires to design and own a hotel/spa/convention center, and is also considering reenlisting in the Maryland Air National Guard.

Relative to 2009's 40th Anniversary of Stonewall, Kip is an avid supporter and member of the Academy of Washington, Inc. – the nation's capital's drag organization. He is proud to have been able to mesh the drag and leather communities (or "leather and lace," as he calls it), creating a larger bond of brother/sisterhood among the often-outcast subcultures of the gay community. Kip was appointed Conjoint Fellow of Club Ziegfeld's/Secrets, serving as Honorary Escort for all their functions. Other organizations that Kip is passionate about include SLDN – Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, NCSF – National Coalition for Sexual Freedom, the CLAW Nation Tour, and LA&M – Leather Archives and Museum.

I have been involved actively in the Leather scene for over 10 years. I listened and watched Leather Sirs who schooled Me on Old Guard ideologies and who have taken Me under the wing. These Old Guard Sirs began to teach Me the importance of protocols and codes of behavior as a testament to the history of Leather. I also read every rag I could get My hand on before immersing Myself in the scene. Through My exploration I learned more about Myself and the incredible men and women who share My passion and love for this community.

I got involved with a group called The New York Panthers Leather Club (NYPLC)-The Only Men of Color Leather Group providing education, self awareness and fellowship in the New York Tri-State Area. It provided Me with a platform to reach out to individuals curious about the leather scene and to be a welcoming face for those seeking involvement.

During this time, I was asked to be a co-founder of Leather Invasion. Its creation was a shared vision to bring together the Leather community through social interactions in non-traditional leather spaces. This was a huge success, introducing NYC to the world of leather as well as providing Me with some of My greatest leather friendships.

After a brief hiatus, I am once again focusing on community. I’ve joined the incredible team at the Leatherman and have been blessed with two new boys in my life.

I am happy to be a judge for Mr. Rawhide Leather and look forward to the incredible work our representative will do for our community. My belief has always been the more the merrier.
